Itinerary
Travel to Philadelphia this afternoon on a deluxe Starr Tours Motorcoach and arrive at the Eastern State Penitentiary for an afternoon tour. This remains one of the most famous prisons in the world, with a list of former inmates that includes bank robber “Slick Willie” Sutton and legendary gangster Al Capone.
In its day, Eastern State set the standard for penal reform, with its soaring, castle-like Gothic architecture and its founders’ Quaker-inspired belief that solitary confinement could help reform criminals. An estimated 300 prisons on four continents used Eastern’s distinctive “wagon-wheel” floor plan as a blueprint. Today, it offers a glimpse of life inside the prison’s historic cell blocks through exhibits like Al Capone’s restored 19th-century cell, stories of inmate escapes, and critically acclaimed art installations.
Following your afternoon on the inside, you break out for dinner. We can include this in your tour, or have it optional as you wish. There are many great bars and restaurants within walking distance of the Penitentiary including: Bad Brother, Jack’s Firehouse, Fairmont Pizza & Grill, The Fairview, The Fare, Hilltown Tavern just to name a few.
After dinner you are returned to prison for Halloween Nights, from the creators of Terror Behind the Walls, is a brand-new festival of epic proportions. It transforms abandoned cellblocks and courtyards into newly designed immersive environments, and activates the historic stone architecture with large-scale video projections and other special effects. Several sections of the penitentiary complex will be open to the public for the very first time.
You experience a festival-style event consisting of 15 attractions, including two haunted houses (which can be bypassed for less scary experiences). Also included will be four immersive walkthrough experiences, two live performances, four themed bars and lounges, and special effects like laser shows and large-scale video projections.
Halloween Nights will also feature a highlights audio tour of the penitentiary’s architecture with newly recorded narration by actor Steve Buscemi, as well as a guided, flashlight walking tour of the prison hospital wing focusing on the prison’s complex history. Two award-winning exhibits that invite reflection on issues of criminal justice today will also be open during Halloween Nights at Eastern State Penitentiary.
Included with your Halloween Nights ticket is a nightcap at The Speakeasy at Al Capone’s Cell. This cozy little hideaway is a great way to end your night at Halloween Nights. Surprises are hiding around every corner in The Speakeasy at Al Capone’s Cell. Come for the live entertainment, the drinks, and the company. Stay for the spooky aesthetic.
