Day 2 – Longwood Mansion – Natchez Heritage School of Cooking Demonstration & Lunch – Old South Winery Tour & Tasting – Stanton Hall – Natchez Little Theatre
This morning after breakfast, tour Longwood Mansion, the largest octagonal Mansion in America. Learn how the Civil War halted its construction and was never fully completed. The house is still filled with the original furnishings and tools still intact. It’s a fascinating house full of unique history.
Next, enjoy the Natchez Heritage School of Cooking Demonstration & Lunch. Three generations of Natchez women sharing African American recipes and lessons. Taste the traditions of the African heritage diet as you learn the stories of the African people.
The afternoon features a tour and tasting at the Old South Winery. It may seem a little unusual to be touting a winery as an attraction in the deep South, but it does exist and it is indeed something to experience. The winery is run by the Galbreath family and the wines are created from Muscadines (an American grape with a European name), grown in a vineyard right outside the facilities’ back door. After the tour, the staff will pour you a small sample of each of the products they create from their grapes, so you can see what a treat they really are. The local favorite is a rose’ labeled Miss Scarlet.
Then visit Stanton Hall, also known as Belfast, an Antebellum Classical Revival mansion. Built in the 1850s, it is one of the most opulent antebellum mansions to survive in the southeastern United States. It is now operated as a historic house museum by the Pilgrimage Garden Club.
Dinner this evening is included at a local restaurant. Following dinner, enjoy a show at the Natchez Little Theatre, Mississippi’s Oldest Community Theatre. The Theatre produces musicals, comedies, tragedies, mysteries, musicals, Shakespeare, Pulitzer and Tony award winning plays, as well as original productions. (B,L,D)
Day 3 – Frogmore Plantation – Depart for home
After breakfast, tour Frogmore Plantation, the only cotton plantation in the South offering a comprehensive guided tour that fully explains the causes and effects of change on a working cotton plantation from the 1700’s through today. Frogmore is a one-of-a-kind tour since the owners are the costumed guides along with their staff. Visitors receive the most thorough explanation of slave culture and the plantation system in America, based on former slave narratives and extensive archives while viewing the tools and antiques in the authentically restored dependency buildings on the property.
After the tour, depart for home. (B)
